Ali Farka Touré

Ali Farka Touré died from bone cancer earlier this month. I didn't hear about it until the night before last, and I didn't want to believe it, I hoped that maybe the person had misheard. Touré's collaboration with Ry Cooder, Talking Timbuktu, was my introduction to West African music and main motivation for planning to go to the Festival in the Desert, now put off to 2008. Now I will go with the knowledge that my stalling made me miss a legend. I heard the CD during my first summer in the Rockies, and it is forever tied in my mind to the dry, arid mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. He was a great artist and I can honestly say he was one of the few musicians whose music had a part in making me who I am today.

Ironically, I was introduced to his music due to his death. A friend, saddened by the loss, couldn't believe I hadn't heard of him, so he lent some cds. Now, "In the Heart of the Moon" is among some of my favorite albums...

That's the only album of his I haven't heard yet. I should pick it up today.
